Susan’s donation closes the gap in funding necessary to complete the Lear’s Macaw subsidy for the 2009 growing season for the subsistence farmers that have had their corn crops attacked, and in some cases destroyed, by the critically endangered Lear’s Macaws.
The Lear’s Macaw Corn Subsidy Project is an important part of the conservation efforts for the Lear’s Macaw. The two greatest threats to the Lear’s Macaws are persecution (death) due to farmers shooting the Lear’s feeding on their crops…and poaching. The Lear’s Macaw Corn Subsidy Project compensates the farmers for their losses due to attacks by the Lear’s Macaws and turns the Lear’s Macaw from their enemy, to an asset….they can let the Lear’s Macaws feed and the population recover, yet be guaranteed that they will be compensated for this effort.
