ProAves Colombia has recently announced the establishment of eight new ecological easements – protected strips of forest on coffee and cacao farms, which protect and conserve threatened flora and fauna, providing shade for the crops and a place for migratory birds, such as the Cerulean Warbler (Dendroica cerulea) to arrive.

The program, which was created two years ago, has already resulted in the establishment of 13 easements in the country. 11 were set up this year, three of them in San Vicente de Chucuri, Santander, within the Cerulean Warbler corridor.

The establishment of these easements connects the local government to conservation efforts, the aim of which is to conserve these areas forever, and the reason that ProAves conserves 458 hectares of land which protect the habitats of threatened species.

The eight most recent easements were approved in the town of Jardin, Antioquia, for the conservation of the Yellow-eared Parrot.  Five others are currently in progress which will further strengthen habitat conservation for many species within the Cerulean Warbler corridor in San Vicente de Chucuri.

Paul Salaman, Director of World Land Trust, says:  “We would like to thank all of the government and non-government institutions that develop and approve conservation initiatives and that provide support for their establishment and implementation. Our thanks also go to the local governments in Jardín, Antioquia and San Vicente de Chucuri (Santander) to Corantioquia, the American Bird Conservancy, and Loro Parque Fundación, and to all of the community members who have been part of this process.”
