Eco Tourism is a Great Way to Protect Parrots in the Wild

Project update: Wednesday, 17 June 2009
By Bonnie Zimmermann

There is nothing more exciting than seeing a parrot in the wild, flying past you a break-neck speed, screaming and swooping over the canopy. I have had the great fortune to see many different psittacines in the wild in South and Central America, and obviously Indonesia. And you never tire of it — and it instills such great respect for these creatures.

My first experience seeing parrots in the wild was in Jamacia in 1982 — and I was hooked on hookbills. At that point in my life I have never ever considered keeping a parrot as a companion bird and just appreciated them for who and what they are. 27 years later I am still in awe and am proud to be part of the IPP eco-tourism program.

I’d love to hear where you saw your first parrot in the wild – and share stories and adventures. Eco-tourism not only helps protect and conserve these birds around the world, but also are life-changing adventures.
